Waves of Change

Every minute, a million plastic bags are used. Growing up, I witnessed many forested areas being cleared and built over to provide an urban living space for the neverending materialistic pursuits of mankind who, ironically, call such places an oasis. Since then, the conflict between humans and nature only seemed to grow stronger. However, I believed that this was a false dichotomy - that people and the environment could co-exist with one another, much like the mutualism between a bird and a horse.

When I was offered a chance to join Project CPR, I jumped at the opportunity to make a true difference. As the Chinese adage goes, “千里之行,始于足下”. To effect change at a large scale, one must start small. Project CPR offered me the platform to interact not just with sponsors, industry leaders and volunteers, but also members of public. Project CPR focuses our efforts at changing the mindset of people regarding single-use plastics, by engaging the public first-hand during coastal cleanups and exhibitions, and encouraging them to switch to more sustainable substitutes.

As the Programmes Assistant, I had the privilege of helping to plan and execute Plastic-Less July, which was a 2 day exhibition at Westgate, especially through tailoring the activities towards children and youth. Even though I did not have any experience in such large scale events, my team was more than willing to help out and impart their invaluable expertise and knowledge regarding events management. I would like to extend my gratitude to the BWS management team, staff, and last but not least, the Project CPR team. I am truly happy to have come out of this experience a better servant leader, follower, and person - one who leads and serves with Sincerity, Gratitude, Service and Kindness.
